I bend and push a stem aside, and there, low in the shade, is a heavy cluster of ripe berries. I work my hand in through the leaves, careful, feeling for them more than seeing them, and I am so lost in the reaching that the high thin whine circling my head barely registers. My fingers close on the cluster just as the mosquito settles on my cheek. I am easing the berries loose, one at a time, when the bite begins to burn.

Across the garden another currant bush is shaking, a catbird somewhere inside it, working the berries the way I am working mine. For the past two weeks, I have watched them at it, the Robins and the Catbirds, taking their share. I go back to my own cluster, plucking the ripe shiny black ones, leaving the reddish-black ones to ripen more fully. At first I am only harvesting, intent on the work. Then my fingers brush the leaves and the Black Currant releases its scent, green and resinous, a sharpness like pine, and I draw it in without meaning to. My shoulders drop. The picking slows to a rhythm I am no longer driving. I think of Robin Wall Kimmerer, and her book The Serviceberry, where she gathers fruit with gratitude and a sense of reciprocity, and calls it a way of living inside a climate of sufficiency.

Later, I walked back to the edge of the garden, stood beside the pear tree, and looked out across the beds where I have planted Black Currants. The one near the raspberries is crowded, smaller in stature, its leaves dull, its berries few. The plant in the middle of the garden stands in the open. Over the winter I pruned out old canes, in spring I mulched with wood chips and weeded a four-foot circle around the shrub, and the plant has responded with eighteen inches of new growth and broad, glossy leaves. I clipped four short sections of stem from it and carried them inside, where I laid out the whole plant on the counter, stem and leaf, berry and bud.

I stood there a while, taking them in. Then I went looking for a way to make tea, and found that Europe has steeped Black Currant leaves for centuries, and that the trail led on to Japan, to kukicha, twig tea. It began as a lesser thing, the prunings and stems left over after the leaf harvest, handed to the workers on the tea farms. Over time the recipe was refined, and the humble tea became a touchstone, a taste of home and of rural life. There was something fitting in that, a tradition built from the parts that were ussually thrown away, and I wanted to see what the same attention would draw out of the Black Currant.

So I followed the old method and let the plant correct me where I was wrong. I wilted the leaves in a hot pan and finished drying them in a dehydrator. The stems I cut into short lengths and set in the oven to roast, waiting for them to darken and match the description in the recipe. They never did. They shrank and dried. They gave off a toasted sweetness, then began to lose it, but they stayed the pale brown of bare wood no matter how long I left them. The color I was waiting for was not coming. The plant was telling me that I would have to know it was ready some other way, by the smell and not the eye. I took the stems out when the kitchen smelled faintly of toast.

I lightly simmered the roasted stems for six minutes and the water turned a deep amber. The first taste had the smell ahead of it, toast and a dark caramel and somewhere under that, the resin of pine. Then the flavor, sweet at the front, with a tannic grip at the back that dried the sides of my mouth.

The leaves brewed up a bright yellow, mild, with something earthy beneath the mildness, the quietest of the three.

The buds I almost didn’t trust. Five of them in a little water threw off a clear liquor with the strongest character of all, pungent, catty, a sharpness that crowded the nose and read at first as something gone slightly wrong. It was not an appetizing smell. It did not invite me in. And yet there was something in it I wanted to go back to, the green concentrate of the whole plant, new life waiting to be released, intriguing in the way a strong cheese is intriguing, the off-note and the depth impossible to separate.

Then I poured all three into one cup. They fused. The sharp and the mild and the sweet found each other and settled, and what had been three strange and partial things became one. The plant, rejoined.

As I sat with the cup, the plant went on teaching. My mouth registered a grip at first, a dryness along the sides of the tongue, and I thought I had ruined it, steeped the stems too long and pulled the tannins out of the wood. But I had not done anything that needed undoing. As the tea cooled and I kept drinking, the grip softened on its own, and as it softened the cup turned luscious, an improbable richness rising as the tannin let go. I had reached for a mistake to correct and found instead that the tea only asked me to wait. What was left in the mouth was something you feel more than taste. One body nourishing another.

That feeling of nourishment was still with me later that day when I listened to Andrew Weil and Wade Davis talk about coca on the Tim Ferriss podcast. They spoke of a plant the outside world has badly misunderstood, sacred for thousands of years to the people of the Andes, woven into their work and their worship, their greetings and their grief. The war on it, they said, was never only a war on a drug. It was a war on the people who hold it, on a way of living with the world that the conquering mind could not abide and set out to erase.

What stayed with me was a gesture. In the Andes a person takes three coca leaves, stacks them into a small fan, holds them up, and breathes through them, sending the breath to the mountains and the earth before chewing a single leaf. They call it a k’intu, and it is everywhere in the life of the people. Two travelers meeting on a mountain trail will exchange it before they speak of anything else. It is laid into the great offerings to the earth each August, folded into the bundles a healer reads like a map, carried to the thresholds of a life, its plantings and marriages and burials. The plant is the thread the whole culture is woven on, and the principle it teaches is always the same one. The offering comes first. You give before you take. I sat with that for a while, my cup beside me, and understood that I had no such gesture, that I had drunk the whole plant down and thanked nothing.

I walked past my neighbors’ houses after dinner, traversing a linear grid of uniform lawns, straight lines of choking green, quiet and perfectly even. Then came the sound of disconnection, the near-constant grind of a mower, the high whine of a leaf blower, so much energy and effort directed toward stasis.

I looked up as the sound of the wind drew my attention into the canopy of one of my favorite bur oaks in the neighborhood. The leaves shook. One released, floated through the air, spinning in slow motion, until it settled on the tips of the Kentucky bluegrass, perched on the monoculture. We, like the leaf, have drifted into monoculture gradually, almost unknowingly.

When I finished my evening walk, I turned off the sidewalk into my own backyard and stood before the rustling Black Currant, the one I had pruned and mulched and weeded, the one whose whole body I had finally come to know. The day had not been easy. The harvest was hot and slow, the air close, mosquitoes at my ears the whole time, and making tea went on for hours, the wilting and the roasting and the waiting, the kind of fuss a person could be forgiven for not bothering with. But I have bought a great many easy things, and I can tell you I valued none of them the way I valued that cup. I had spent the day in the plant’s company, taken the parts most people leave behind, learned the way it tells you it is ready. That was the offering. Not three leaves lifted to a mountain, but this, a plant tended and a tea made, attention paid to a being emerging through a crack in the monoculture.

A culture that holds the world in reverence is not built by decree. It is built the way a garden is, one person and one plant at a time, small acts of attention accumulating into a way of being.

Inside, the cup was still on the counter, gone cool. I lifted it, and the smell of the whole plant rose to meet me, toast and green resin with dark sweetness underneath, drifting up, breath meeting breath.

The sunflower seeds rattle against steel and wood, an avian dinner bell. I press the lid down on the feeder until it seats with a satisfying thud. The morning is hazy and golden, the air still, and the dawn chorus vibrates through the cool foliage — a House Wren spilling its bright tumble of notes, a Gray Catbird running through its borrowed songs. The garden is calm.

Then a little storm arrives. They descend from the peach tree into the apple tree, thin darting flashes at the edge of sight, too quick to resolve, the air quivering with their calls. A family of Chickadees. I take three steps back from the feeder and stand under the arbor at the entrance to our garden. Both parents zip down to the feeder and back, shuttling seeds to fledglings that beg loudly from the apple tree, the branches shaking, the leaves whispering.

Then I hear a light fluttering, and the soft tick of tiny claws grasping wood. I look up. A newly fledged Chickadee is perched just above my head, fluttering his wings, giving an incessant buzzy call. But his body stays still, holding his place on the wood. His tail is short and stubby. Fuzzy feathers cover his whole body, so he looks rounder and plumper than his parents, a nascent version of them. But under the fuzz is the same bold chickadee attitude. He does not even look at me. He is fully absorbed in asking for and receiving food. When a seed finally comes, he goes perfectly still to eat it, and for a few seconds there is nothing in the world but the seed. Then he pauses and cocks his head, turning it this way and that, taking the world in. He does not yet know there is anything to fear.

Over the next week the young Chickadees change. They begin to notice me. I know where they are in the yard by their constant calls while I work in the garden, and sometimes they still come in close and watch me, especially when I am bent over a task and they seem to know I am not paying attention. The adults trust me, and it seems their young are learning to trust me too. But the easy nearness of that first morning is gone. I keep trying to get close, and now when I approach they bounce away through the vegetation, giving alarm calls. I have to be content with a certain distance between us.

If I am persistent, I can still have brief, intimate encounters. The Chickadee’s curiosity often holds him in place, staring at an insect, twig, or leaf. My curiosity pulls me into the same scene. My guard drops.

This chasing and cataloging used to be my whole life, my way of being. I wrapped myself in the scientific method like armor. It served me. It is one way to get ahead. But it kept me at a remove from life, watching it through glass. The Chickadee begins his life in a cup, walled in twigs and moss, and then he leaves it for good. I did the opposite. I left the nest like everyone does, and then spent years building the walls back up around myself, one careful pane at a time. I have always been a slow learner. It took me the better part of fifty years to notice the glass was there.

Three decades of living behind that glass kept me at a distance. But the birds created a small opening, and the morning light came through. I felt the warmth in my chest. I began to notice new and different details. The glint in a bird’s eye. The way they turn their heads. How they look at me, how they look at each other. How attuned they are to everything around them, wary and at ease in the same moment.

Beginning to feel had the curious effect of softening my ego, and with it came the desire to share. But bringing myself into the story, putting myself on the page, was a bigger hurdle than describing any bird. For most of my life I treated my introversion and sensitivity as problems to solve. I brought all my logic to the task. The birds showed me I had it backward. What I had been trying to fix was the part of me that could see and feel. Once I stopped trying to fix it, I could accept the person I had been all along. That part of me, the part I had been hiding, is as beautiful as that scruffy fledgling Chickadee asking with his whole body.

As a way to continue this journey, to take the next uncomfortable step, I am putting my words onto a tangible page. A book, written for you, the thoughtful readers who have been so encouraging. You have shown me that I am not alone. I wanted to make something real and beautiful, as true to who I am right now as I could make it. And then send it into the world the way that fledgling launched itself off the arbor over my head — exposed and asking.

You hear them before you see the water. Driving in toward the refuge the sky begins to fill, ragged lines of waterfowl crossing low over the road, flock after flock wheeling off toward the river, and by the time the wetland comes into view the air itself seems to be moving. On a good day in fall you come up over the rise and the water is not water at all but birds, thousands of them, a shifting skin of ducks and geese and pelicans laid across the whole surface, and the murmur of content voices comes across the flats in waves, the gabble and whistle and honk of all of them at once, birds lifting and circling and settling, more coming in overhead the whole time. It is one of the great sights in Illinois. Emiquon and Chautauqua, two wildlife refuges set side by side along the Illinois River, hold this kind of abundance every spring and every fall, and most people in this state have no idea it is here.

I have stood at the edge of that and wanted, more than I can easily explain, to be among it. To be close. And I have not been able to.

The birds are out there, but they are at a remove, hundreds of yards across open water, swimming in and out of the heat shimmer that smears them into color. And the moment you try to close the distance, the whole thing comes apart. There is no blind, no cover, no fold of ground to hide behind, so the instant you come into the open the nearest birds go up, and their going lifts the next, and the alarm rolls outward across the flat until the air is full of everything you came to be near, all of it leaving. Then you wait. You stand still and small at the edge and wait for them to forget you and drift back, and it takes thirty minutes and it only works at all if you have not picked up an escort, a pair of Canada geese who have decided you do not belong and pace back and forth in front of you scolding, announcing you to every bird on the water. Which happens as often as not.

I went through a season of refusing that, of trying, really trying, to get down among them. At Chautauqua you can walk off the levee toward the water, but the levee is armored with riprap, and you go down a steep face of loose shifting boulders, and at the bottom there is a wall of willow between you and the shallows, so you wade into the mud and stand in the thicket and hope. One hot afternoon I pulled on knee-high boots and waded out into the open mud and set a folding chair down in the thin vegetation and lowered myself into it to wait, hidden as well as I could manage, doing everything I knew to do. The water was still twenty yards off. And as I sat there in the sun, the chair began to sink. I felt it go, slow, the legs settling down into the muck under my weight, a little at a time, until the seat met the surface of the mud and the warm reeking water of the marsh came up through the fabric and soaked into me.

I stayed in the wet chair a while anyway. The birds never came close.

The abundance of waterfowl stands against the scarcity of grassland birds. These two groups of birds are on opposite trajectories, yet they are part of the same story.

Since 1970 North America has lost nearly three billion birds, close to a third of all the birds that were here. The steepest losses are in the open country. Grassland birds have fallen by more than half, and the Eastern Meadowlark, that rusty whistle over every pasture I knew growing up, is down to one in four. Three of every four meadowlarks, gone. And in those same fifty years, one kind of bird went up. Waterfowl rose by more than half. Wetland birds are the only group on the continent that gained ground.

Same years, same country. Grassland birds collapse while Waterfowl thrive, and the difference is not in the birds. It is in us. The duck was saved on purpose, by people who taxed themselves to do it. In 1934, with the marshes drying up in the Dust Bowl, duck hunters backed a law requiring themselves to buy a federal stamp every year before they could hunt. In the ninety years since, the Duck Stamp has raised more than a billion dollars and put over six million acres of wetland into permanent protection. A few years later the same community got behind an excise tax on their own guns and ammunition, and across the decades that tax has sent something near nineteen billion dollars to wildlife. Hunters voted to tax themselves, again and again, because they understood themselves as people who wanted to give back to the thing they love.

The Meadowlark had no such constituency. There is no stamp you must buy to watch a bird, no tax on the money Americans spend to look at them. And the scale of that money is the part that should cause us to pause. The federal government counts it every five years, and the last count, in 2022, found that about fourteen million Americans hunted and spent some forty-five billion dollars doing it, while a hundred and forty-eight million watched wildlife and spent two hundred and fifty billion. Ten watchers for every hunter. More than five dollars spent watching for every dollar spent hunting. Wildlife watching alone, by itself, outweighs all the hunting and fishing in the country combined. And little of that vast watching economy is required to restore the land. It runs through the cash registers and evaporates. The hunters, fewer and spending less, built a machine that has protected six million acres.

Birders have hardly been idle. They built the Audubon societies and the land trusts, fought for the refuges, fund the counts and the science that told us the birds were vanishing in the first place. A great deal of what we know and much of what we have saved, we owe to them. But almost all of it runs on what people choose to give, and giving, however generous, has not been enough to turn the tide. The hunters built something that does not wait to be chosen. The tax collects whether anyone feels generous that year or not.

But there is a deeper reason the Duck’s solution cannot save the Meadowlark, and once you see it the whole question turns. You can save a duck by buying a marsh. A wetland is a discrete thing; you acquire it, you flood it, the ducks come. The meadowlark does not live in a place you can fence off. It lives in working farmland, in pasture and hayfield and grassy margin, on the land that grows our food. We have lost ninety percent of the native grassland on this continent, and what is left of the grassland birds is squeezed in around the agriculture. You cannot buy the Meadowlark a marsh. The only way to save it is to change how the farmland itself is farmed.

I have farmed, and I know farmers who would tell you the truth if you caught them tired enough. Most are not getting rich. A lot are barely hanging on, working land they do not fully own to grow a crop they sell at a price somebody else sets, on margins thin enough that a bad year is a real threat. And many do not love what the system makes them do to the land. They watch the soil wash, they tear out the last fencerow for four more rows of corn, and some part of them grieves it even as they do it, but math does not leave room to do otherwise.

That trap is the thing. The bird’s crisis and the farmer’s crisis are not two problems. They are one. The grassland emptied because the farm got squeezed, and the farm got squeezed by the same forces that emptied the grassland. Which means they might share a way out. The thing that pays the farmer to keep the bird might be the same thing that lets the farmer keep the farm.

That sounds like wishful thinking until you go look at the places where it is already happening. In Sussex, a farm called Knepp spent generations losing money on heavy clay until its owners stopped pushing, let the land go back toward something wilder, and began charging people to come and see it. It now runs a nature-tourism business that turns a profit the conventional estates around it cannot match. The farm that lost money growing crops makes money growing wildness.

Closer to home, in the Nebraska Sandhills, the Switzer family ran cattle on a spread that could not quite carry three generations. There were greater prairie chickens on the ranch, a grassland grouse in trouble across its range, and it had never occurred to anyone the birds were worth a dime until a guest said people would pay to watch them dance. In 2007 they ran their first tours anyway, sitting visitors in blinds at dawn to watch the males boom and stamp on the lek, and it worked. One month of birding now brings in about a quarter of the year’s tourism revenue. And the added income is part of what made it possible for the next generation to come home to the ranch. The birds brought the children back to the land.

The Switzers and Knepp are large and charismatic. The question that matters to me is whether this works on an ordinary farm, on a few hundred acres, with common birds. For that the best evidence is in south Texas, where ranches no bigger than a single farm have turned themselves into bird-photography destinations. The owners dug small ponds and built low blinds at the water, set so the light comes clean, and photographers fly in and pay a daily rate to sit in them. Look at what they are paying to photograph. Cardinals. Buntings. Sparrows, Finches, Woodpeckers. Backyard birds. People drive hundreds of miles and pay by the day to photograph a Cardinal, and they come back.

They are not paying for a rare bird. They are paying for the view. The Cardinal eight feet away instead of twenty, at eye level, in good light, while they sit hidden and comfortable and the bird behaves as though they are not there. That experience is almost impossible to get on your own, and it is entirely manufactured. The pond is dug, the perch placed, the blind built, the light accounted for. None of it depends on the bird being unusual. All of it depends on someone having taken the trouble to make the meeting close and easy and beautiful.

There is an objection I can feel coming, because I have had it myself. It is fine for Texas, fine for the Sandhills. But I live in the middle of Illinois, and nobody comes here. I could dig the pond and build the blind and not one stranger would ever drive out to look at a bird in my back forty.

It is a reasonable doubt, and I know it is mostly wrong, because of what happened this spring a few miles from my house. Out near El Paso, in Woodford County, a low place in a farm field took on water in the spring rains and held it. Four acres. Not a refuge, not a restoration. A wet spot in a cornfield, the kind of thing a farmer curses because he cannot get the planter across it. It held water for a couple of weeks, and that was enough.

The birds found it almost at once, because the flyway runs over us every spring whether we offer it anything or not, and all that was ever missing from that field was the water. Shorebirds working the mud. White Ibis and Glossy Ibis probing shallow water. An Eared Grebe diving for food, a Marbled Godwit working the water’s edge, and the biggest attraction of all—a Cinnamon Teal, a duck of the western marshes, swimming amidst a flock of Blue-winged Teal. And over all of it the yellowlegs and the American Golden-Plovers, restless, never quite settling, lifting and circling and crying their wild high notes as they chased and foraged and wheeled around the wetland, animating the whole scene. These were birds in the middle of enormous journeys, the golden-plovers bound from one end of the earth nearly to the other, stopping here a few days on four accidental acres because the water was exactly what they needed, exactly when they needed it. And then the people found the birds. They came from Chicago and Indiana and all over the state, and you can watch them arrive in the record, because birders log what they see, and the checklists from this wetland stacked up day after day. They parked on the gravel shoulder and stood in the wind looking at a sheet of water that would be dry by June. Nobody built them a thing. There was nowhere to sit, no reason to stay past the bird. They came anyway, for four accidental acres in a place where, supposedly, nobody comes.

So I have a hard time with the doubt anymore. If four acres of water that nobody dug can pull birders out of three states, then the question was never whether people will come to the middle of Illinois. They already do. The question is only whether anyone will give them a reason to stay, and a place to sit while they do.

I have come to think the thing standing in the way is not the birds and not the people. It is a failure of nerve, a kind of faithlessness we wear so close we mistake it for realism. We live out here under one of the great flyways on the continent and we have convinced ourselves that the good thing happens somewhere else, that abundance is a property of famous places, that the warblers are for Ohio and the cranes are for Nebraska and what we have is just corn. The mind leans that way on its own, but it has had help. A farmer who believes the land can be only one thing, who believes the margins are thin because that is simply how things are, is a farmer who plants fence to fence and buys what he is told to buy and sells at the price he is given, and never sets aside the back forty, and never imagines the birds are worth a dime. Scarcity keeps him small and alone and a little afraid, and a great deal depends on his staying that way. The belief is useful to someone. It is just not true.

Because the birds are already here. That is the part the faithlessness cannot take in. Every night in spring the sky over my house fills with them, millions of birds moving north in the dark, unseen, passing over the corn and the closed-up towns, looking down the whole way for the thing they always look for, water and cover and a place to rest. They are not a hope. They are traffic, nightly, overhead. The El Paso puddle did not summon them out of nothing. It offered, by accident, the one thing they were already searching for, and down they came. The flyway does not need me to believe in it. It needs me to put out the water.

Still most farmers think you cannot run a lodge on a hobby, it would never pencil out. I want to show them the thing they say cannot exist is already operating two counties over. In the creek bottoms of west-central Illinois there are farms that have built lodges, real ones, with a chef in the kitchen and cabins that rent for three and four hundred dollars a night and a booking calendar that fills a year out. Hunters fly in from other states and pay two thousand, twenty-five hundred dollars for the chance at a single animal. The whole apparatus exists to monetize the White-tailed Deer, and it is built almost entirely around the rut, around about two weeks in November.

Two weeks. If a farm can build a lodge and a kitchen and a brand around fourteen good days of deer, I cannot make the objection hold that it could never work for spring and fall migration. And look at what these operations do with their land. The serious ones plant hundreds of acres of food plots, deliberately, at real cost, taking commodity acres out of production and managing it for an animal because the animal is worth more than the corn. They have already run the calculation at the center of everything I am trying to say. They just ran it for Deer.

So the objection was never really true. It was never that Midwestern farmers will not manage land for wildlife or build the lodge or trust that strangers will come. They will. They have been doing it for thirty years. The objection was only that stewardship needs a buyer, and for a long time the only buyer at the door came in November with a bow or gun. What I am proposing is gentler. It asks the same farm, the same bottomland, the same lodge, to face a different season and a far larger crowd. There are something like ninety-six million birdwatchers in this country. There are not ninety-six million people who will fly to Illinois to shoot a buck. The smaller market built the lodges. The larger one has not yet been invited in.

For most of my life the answer to who would build this in the Midwest was nobody, and the reason was not that the birds or the people were missing. It was that the two halves never found each other. The farmer had no way to reach the stranger, and no taste for marketing, and the birder had no way to know the farm existed. That gap is finally closing, because the birders close it themselves, for free, and cannot help it. They log what they see into a public record anyone can search, and the moment a good bird turns up somewhere the report goes out and the next wave comes and files their own. The El Paso puddle is the whole engine in miniature. Nobody advertised that field. The checklists were the advertising.

Build something real and that engine runs for you in a way no paid ad can match, because it compounds and does not stop. An ad quits the day you stop paying; a place’s record only grows, and that history belongs to the land forever. You would be the only private farm for a hundred miles playing this game. You would not be buying attention. You would be building an asset that appreciates, and it appreciates because birders appreciate birds, which is the steadiest demand I know. The price of corn rides on wars and weather and a board in Chicago that will never know the farmer’s name. The longing to see a living bird does not trade on any exchange. When the corn price guts the year, the warblers still come north, and the people who love them still want to be near them.

And a farmer does not have to carry the cost of that land alone while it grows into something worth visiting. The scaffolding already exists. The Conservation Reserve Program pays a farmer to take marginal acres out of production and put them back to grass and wetland, which is precisely the habitat the grassland birds need, and a conservation easement can do the same in perpetuity while easing the tax burden of holding the land. These were built to keep working ground in cover, not to start bird-tourism businesses, and the rules around earning income on enrolled acres are their own thicket a farmer should walk through with his FSA office before he counts on anything. But the bones of the support are there. A back forty in CRP, restored and held, is already half of what a blind needs to look out on.

There is a second engine bolted to the first, and it runs on something a checklist cannot carry. A list is text. It tells a birder the ibis is there, and that is enough to put him in the car, but it does not travel beyond the people who keep lists. A photograph does. When a photographer comes home from a morning in a good blind and posts the image he got, the bird close and sharp and lit, the water beaded on its back, the eye looking almost into the lens, that picture goes out into a world ten times larger than the birding world, onto the feeds where people who have never kept a list in their lives stop scrolling and stare. And the first thing they wonder is where that was, and the second is whether they could see a bird like that themselves.

The roadside puddle and the built blind put the same bird on the same list, but they do not produce the same photograph, and the photograph is the part that spreads. From the gravel shoulder, scope braced against the wind, you get a smudge, proof you were there, and nobody shares the smudge. From a low blind at the edge of the water with the light coming clean, you get the picture a photographer has wanted his whole life, and that one he posts, and that one travels. The very thing he is paying for, the closeness, is the same thing that turns his picture into your advertisement. Every photographer who sits in your blind walks out and markets the place for you, for free, simply by showing the world what he saw.

I will not pretend the engine runs on wishes. It runs on birds. The record amplifies whatever is actually out there, and if the habitat is thin the lists will say so as plainly as they would sing if it were rich. You cannot fake your way onto that map. You earn it by restoring land that truly produces, which means the marketing and the conservation turn out to be the same act. There is a Farm Bill being written this year that will decide for the next five whether the programs that pay a farmer to put a back forty into prairie grow or shrink. I notice the duck hunters got their stamp because they organized and asked, and I notice that ninety-six million of us go looking for birds every year and have asked for almost nothing.

I keep coming back to what the photographers in Texas are really buying, because I do not think it is only a photograph, and I do not think it is only a bird.

Most of us come to birds through the list. You learn the names and start to keep them, and the keeping is its own clean pleasure, the new bird, the rare one, the checkmark. I do not want to talk anyone out of that. The list is the appetite that gets you out of bed before light. But the list is the surface of birding, and there is a floor under it that most of us never drop through, and the way down is not a rarer bird. The way down is closeness.

A blind is a small room built for paying attention. It asks one thing of you, and it is the hardest thing. Stay. Get low, get quiet, stop reaching, and let the world come to you instead of chasing it down. And here is what I have learned the slow way, which is the only way I seem to learn anything. You cannot do that if you cannot sit still, and you cannot sit still if you are not, at least a little, at peace with your own company in the dark. The bird will not come near a restless person. The stillness the blind asks of you is the same stillness the rest of a life keeps asking for and rarely gets, and most of us never give it, because being quiet and alone with ourselves is the one thing we have arranged our whole days to avoid.

But sit there long enough, still enough, and a cardinal you have seen ten thousand times lands eight feet away in clean morning light and turns its head, and something in you goes quiet that is almost never quiet. You understand with a small shock that you have never actually looked at this bird before. You knew the name. You did not know the bird. And it does not matter at all, in that moment, whether it is the commonest bird in the county or one you will never see again, because the rarity was never the point. The point is that you got close enough to drop into the present and meet yourself there.

That is what the photographers are really buying, and what the rest of us are after whether we have the words for it or not. Not the rare bird held at arm’s length. The near one. The common miracle, met up close, by someone who has gotten quiet enough to receive it. We are starved for that, and not only in our birding. We live at a great distance now from nearly everything we say we love, craning over each other’s shoulders at something far off and bright while the close thing goes unwatched behind us. The cure is not a better view of the far thing. It is the patience to get near the thing already here.

My hope is that a few farms along our river restore wetlands in the right corner of a restored bottom and set a low blind to the morning light. I want the grosbeak and the bunting and the ordinary passing warbler, seen that close, to be worth enough to a quiet stranger that the farmer can keep the land in birds, make a living doing it, and give his children a reason to come home. For a long time those looked to me like different things, even competing things, the birds or the crop, the stewardship or the income, the farm or the freedom to leave it. They are not. The birds and the crops and the family are one thing wearing three faces. They are what the land gives back the moment we stop insisting it can be only one thing, the moment we trade the scarcity we were handed for the abundance that was here the whole time. And I want the strangers who come to sit in those blinds to carry the harder half of it home. That the treasure was never the rare bird chased across the county. It was the common one, met in stillness, by a person who had finally learned to sit quietly enough to be met in return.

The meadowlark is still out there on the fencepost, for now, singing her rusty falling song over a field that does not yet pay anyone to keep it. I would like to live long enough to sit in a blind at the edge of that field and watch a stranger see her well for the first time, close enough to go quiet inside, and know that the seeing was what saved her.

I set up for a four-hour bird sit, hoping a crowd of kids would walk over from the festival to watch birds with me. I had empty picnic tables, six pairs of binoculars, a “Birdwatching Here” sign, and the Constitution Trail on three sides. I looked at the empty tables and imagined them full of curious young birdwatchers, maybe fifty of them. The day seemed promising. People were streaming past just thirty feet away, a conveyor belt of modern momentum. A few of them glanced over at us, a brief flicker of curiosity in their eyes, but the current of life carried them along. No one turned in. And for a long time, there were no birds. The water ran clear and empty over the rocks, and I was not sure they would come at all.

The water feature we designed with the Town of Normal Parks Department was ready. This little oasis was planted with native plants and contains a 60 foot recirculating creek flowing over large sandstone rocks. We keep the little creek roped off so migrating birds have somewhere to rest and drink without being disturbed. A sign by the ropes said TRAVELERS AT REST. PLEASE BE QUIET. Three hundred yards away, at the Illinois Art Station, a crowd was gathering for World Migratory Bird Day. Mercy was over there teaching kids how to use binoculars.

The first people to reach me were a little boy and his mother. I could tell they were not here for the birds. The boy slipped off his Crocs, ready for the creek, and ran up to the sign. He looked at it. He looked at his mother. He stamped his foot. She read the words out loud and told him they would have to watch from a distance and look for the birds instead. He lasted about ten seconds before running off.

In the silence that followed, I started to have doubts. Peak spring migration, a beautiful Saturday morning, and here I sat by myself with no birds and no people. Barb showed up just in time. A fellow board member from the Grand Prairie Bird Alliance, a former teacher, she did the thing I hesitate to do. She walked out to the trail and started waving people in toward the water. Before long I had three families gathered around me and the birds were close. There were Robins working the grass, a couple of Blue Jays, and a Downy Woodpecker in the Elm. But there was too much commotion for any of them to drop to the creek. So I told the families the story of the water feature, why it is here, what the sign means, who the travelers are. They went quiet. Then I heard it for the first time, the thing I would hear all day, in one version or another. “This is so beautiful.” I shared the binoculars around and we practiced on squirrels and a chipmunk on a log. The birds did not come.

The families thanked me and moved on down the trail. Barb came back and we sat at the table and waited. After ten minutes, the birds began to work their way down, and we settled with them into bird time. At first, they were high in the canopy, flashes of color you could not quite hold, a brilliance hidden in foliage. But as we sat there becoming still, the birds dropped to the mid-canopy and we started catching sight of them, an American Redstart fanning its tail, a Tennessee Warbler. Then a Tennessee Warbler came lower still and perched in the Elm over the water, looking down at the creek.

We watched the bird watch the water. He dropped lower, stared, flew down over the creek and looped back up into the canopy. Cautious. Another looping flight, and back up again. Then a small gray flash, and he was down behind a rock in the creek, water spraying up and catching the light. His nerve seemed to pull the others out of the air. The canopy poured itself into the creek, little brilliant flashes dropping to the water one after another. The slipstream of migration. Indigo Buntings flashed blue, Cape May flashed yellow, and then a flame, a Blackburnian Warbler joined the party. I turned to find a kid behind me to share it with. There were two adults rolling past on their bikes, not slowing.

Twenty people stopped over the four hours. Three hundred yards away, the Art Station had two hundred and fifty people come through to do bird crafts, hear bird talks, and play bird games. The fifty kids did not come, and it was just as well. A large group at the rope would have kept every bird in the upper canopy. The thing I had hoped to show a crowd could only be shown to a few. What came instead was a steady undercurrent, one here, one there, the few who were already turning toward the water before they reached it.

More board members drifted down from the Art Station, and after a while there were five of us at the creek enjoying the company of Cape May Warblers, Tennessee Warblers, Bluebirds, Redstarts, and Jays. And then a rare and glorious visitor appeared, a Scarlet Tanager, coming and going, dropping down just above the water and lifting back up into the leaves.

A male Scarlet Tanager up close, in the open, in good light, is beyond words. He is almost too much, a red that does not seem like it should be allowed this far north, set against a black tail and wings. He took his time. A good half hour of swooping down over the creek and pulling back up before he committed, and when he finally dropped down to the creek and bathed it was only for a minute before he was gone again. You had to be still and patient and a little lucky.

We sat and watched him come and go, the five of us, and nobody said anything about the count, or the people inside, or the empty tables. A small circle at a small creek, watching a few birds. I felt my shoulders drop and my breath slow. There was a Tanager in the creek. He was enough.

A Robin came in close, the way Robins do, and landed on a rock a few feet away, a surprisingly large and neat shock of dry grass in her beak. She stopped and turned and looked at me. Not past me, the way you expect a bird to look. At me. The plainest bird, the one nobody lifts binoculars for, and up close her eyes were dark reflecting pools that carried the glint of pure awareness. She held me there a moment, watching me as much as I was watching her, and then carried her grass off to build a hidden nest. I raised my binoculars to the creek. The water that had run clear and empty over the rocks all morning was alive now. A spray of droplets flung off wingtips, catching the sun. And there it was again in all of them, the same glint I had seen in the robin, every bird bathing with those bright eyes half on the water and half on us. We were sharing a single, undivided moment with them, all of us lit from inside by the same thing, all of us watching each other.

I looked up and was surprised to see that a small crowd had gathered around us. I had been so absorbed I had not noticed them come. The Tanager was on a rock no more than ten yards off, out in the open. You did not need binoculars. There were quiet sounds of rustling clothes , people pointing, a little quiet laughter. The Tanager had pulled the people out of the air the same way the Tennessee Warbler had pulled down the flock. Like the Warblers, these passersby had to circle the space first, slowing their stride along the trail, letting their momentum loop around and drop into quiet. They had to match the caution of the birds, finding their own nerve to commit to silence before they could truly see. Wholeness was attracting wholeness, holding us all in the same unhurried circle.

A father and his daughter walked up to the Travelers at Rest sign, the girl a step ahead of him, a pair of binoculars she had made from toilet paper tubes held up and ready. She had shiny straight black hair and steady brown eyes. She hung back a moment, then stepped up to the rope. They had not yet seen the birds. Then she looked at the creek.

I watched her eyes trace the water upstream, and the moment she caught sight of the Tanager a smile bloomed across her face. After a minute the group thinned out and she came over to me. I handed her binoculars and showed her how to use them. She found the creek, and I heard her gasp as the birds came into focus.

Her clear view of the birds prompted questions, and they did not stop. What are these birds? What are they doing? Where did they come from? Where are they going? Why are they in the water? Why are they so nervous? We answered every one, and every answer opened three more. All five of us sat there transfixed by this little girl, watching her connect with the birds.

After about fifteen minutes her dad asked if she was ready to go home. She turned and smiled at me as she handed me the binoculars, said “Thank you,” and turned to follow him. Just then the robin came back to the same rock for more grass, and stopped, and looked at her. Their eyes met. She stopped.

“Just five more minutes, Dad.”

The tree no one planted

plants itself everywhere—

fencerow, alley, the seam

where garage meets ground.

We call it weed.

We call it volunteer.

The birds call it food.

The catbird knows

what we refuse:

the branch bent low with fruit,

red going to black

going to ink.

She takes the gift

with her whole gray body,

chin stained like a child’s,

like mine, like yours.

White mulberry crossed with red,

neither one nor the other,

a tree of two minds

that settled on neither.

Still it feeds them—

the catbird, the bluebird,

thrush in the shadow,

vireos passing through,

deer on their hind legs

reaching high leaves.

What did the tree ask

in return for all that sugar?

Only this: carry the seed.

Only this: spread me far and wide.

And the birds say yes,

and we say no,

and either way the fruit comes back each June,

dark and certain,

a stain you don’t wash off,

a gift when we choose it,

a weed when it chooses us.

They arrive singly, slipping through the canopy and sliding across the water. Then in threes and fours, then a dozen at once. As they settle, their contact calls quiet. By the time the flock has gathered there are thirty, mostly drakes, a few hens. They move quickly to the densest wooded cover, huddling, turning, bobbing, scanning.

I sit still in the Buttonbush, my body obscured by camouflage fabric, my face masked by a mesh screen. I am a partial, vague outline of a human. The fabric is doing the work of feathers. They pick me out anyway. They cannot tell what I am and that uncertainty keeps them bunched up in dense cover.

I feel the presence of a Wood Duck as pressure in my chest. The bobbing head and lit red eyes look through me and pin me to the ground.

To move is to break the spell.

I close my eyes, lower my head, and take two slow breaths and become as still as the shrub I am pretending to be. When I open my eyes and glance without lifting my head, the red eyes are still on me. The drakes have taken me in completely.

I hold the stillness. After a while, I hear new calls nearby. Hooded Mergansers. A hen appears trailing a downy brood of six or seven ducklings. They move in tight formation, carrying the dark eye-stripe even the smallest Merganser bears. From her throat comes a continuous hoarse gaga-gaga, the contact call that keeps them oriented. I am here. You are here. Stay close.

After fifteen minutes I notice a softening. The Mergansers start to come closer, but there is an invisible line they do not cross.

Then two hens cross the line and paddle into a small opening in the forested Wetland. They turn and retreat. They come again, turn, retreat. On the third attempt they slowly drift into the open. They are giving the same hoarse call, but their young have stayed behind in the brush. The mothers have left the ducklings in safety to assess the strange shape at the wood-edge. The brood will move past this spot when it is considered safe. A misjudgment now could cost everything.

They swim to within six feet, paddling back and forth, their calls softening to a whisper.

At this distance they seem so small and delicate, curious and wild.

They are diving birds. In six inches of water, they could not dive. They left the deep water and wooded cover to come into shallow water where they are exposed. The cost of not knowing me was greater than the risk of approach.

Something more is happening. I am being considered. They are weighing me, in their senses, in their Wetland, with their brood at stake. The only thing I can offer in return is to be less. To take up less space. To be more like the Buttonbush.

Both female Mergansers stop paddling.

They become still.

The hoarse calls fade away.

Their soft dark eyes settle on me.

I do not breathe.

The Wetland is very quiet.

Stillness mirroring stillness.

Something in the air slows. Or something in me slows. The light on the water is the same light. The Wood Ducks are still in the cover. The Buttonbush is the Buttonbush. Nothing in the visible world has changed. But the moment is no longer moving forward at the rate it was a second ago.

The Mergansers and I are looking at each other and the looking is the only thing happening. There is no before to remember and no after to anticipate. There is the dark eye of the hen at six feet, the curve of her crest, and the surface of the water that holds her without effort.

I am becoming more myself than I was when I sat down in the Buttonbush this afternoon. Or I am becoming less. I cannot tell which. The two feel the same in this instant.

This instant that is taking a long time.

The silence is the sound of an assessment completed. They have decided I am not an imminent threat. Not that I am a friend. Not that I am welcome. They have downgraded me from possible danger to background feature, the highest classification a wild bird can give a human at six feet in shallow water with her brood in cover. The trust is conditional and specific and real.

Somewhere behind the Buttonbush, the ducklings are still holding position. The silence in front of me is also the silence that will allow the brood to come out of cover when the mothers give the signal that ordinary life can resume. The whole Wetland has been holding its breath because two mothers had to find out what I was.

The appropriate response is to be still. To take it in. To consider.

What it means to be of a place. To be shaped by it. To be at home in it.

To be bold and soft and curious while floating on still water.

The Merganser hens turn slowly. They paddle back into the cover where their ducklings have been holding. They do not call. They do not alarm. They just go.

Within a minute, the Wood Ducks start to move.

A drake at the edge of the Buttonbush takes one step forward, into water that is still mostly shaded. He stops. He looks. Then another drake follows. Then a third. The brotherhood that has held the cover line for an hour is unspooling slowly into the open water of the Wetland.

They had been watching the Mergansers the whole time. They had seen the hens cross the line. They had seen the silence. They had seen the hens turn and go back into the cover without raising any alarm. The Mergansers had run the test for them.

A pre-molt drake will not test an unknown shape himself. The math does not allow it. But he will trust the judgment of a brooding hen with ducklings to feed, because she has more to lose than he does, and if she decided the shape was safe, the shape is safe enough.

The Wood Ducks come out into the opening. The light catches them as they drift past. The iridescent green of the head. The white bridle stripes. The chestnut breast spotted with white. The lit red eye, now turned sideways, attending to the water and the bottom and the other drakes. They have accepted the Mergansers’ verdict on me.

They are doing what Wood Ducks do on open water in mid-May. They are dabbling, drifting, preening, occasionally calling. They are being seen, in full light, by a creature whose stillness they have learned from another creature’s example.

The Mergansers opened a door for me. They opened the same door for the Wood Ducks. The whole Wetland is in the door now.

The Wood Ducks were in the cover where their evolution had placed them. They were watching me from the Buttonbush and the Silver Maple shadow, and their wariness was a different thing than what the Merganser mothers were doing. The Wood Duck evolved in dense cover where threats arrive close and fast. Selection has favored birds that flush first and ask questions never. The cost of a false alarm is cheap. The cost of hesitation is everything.

So the Wood Ducks held the cover while the Mergansers crossed it. Both strategies are correct, tuned to different tasks. The Wood Ducks were protecting themselves. The hens were protecting their young.

By mid-May, these drake Wood Ducks have left their incubating mates and gathered into loose flocks. They are about to molt their flight feathers. For four weeks they will be flightless and exposed. Two months ago, another drake was a rival. Now another drake is a sentry. The math has changed. Social coordination becomes the survival currency.

The flock is a temporary trust built around mutual vulnerability. The peace among the males is the visible sign of that trust. The same red eye that scanned for competing drakes in February now scans for the threats that come at the Wood Duck from every direction at once.

Raccoons in the trees, raiding the cavities, killing the hens on their nests. Rat Snakes in the same cavities, swallowing the clutch in one slow afternoon. Mink on the bank, taking ducklings and the occasional adult at the water’s edge. Snapping Turtles in the water, pulling the small ones under from below. Bullfrogs taking the smallest. Largemouth Bass and Pike doing the same. Great Horned Owls and Barred Owls hunting the roost at dusk. Cooper’s Hawks threading the canopy at mid-day. And in the fall, when the leaves are down and the Wetlands fill with hunters, the steady pressure of a species that has been pursued by people for as long as people have lived in this country.

The Wood Duck is hunted from above, from below, from the bank, from the cavity, from the air, and from the blind. Every quarter of the bird’s world contains something that wants to eat it. The brotherhood at the cover line is what many eyes look like when no direction is safe.

This is why I saw thirty birds together with no aggression. Not tolerance. Alliance. Brotherhood for the duration of the vulnerable weeks, and then back to the solitude and the rivalries of the rest of the year.

The brilliance is the thing about the bird that arrests every observer. The iridescent green head, the white bridle stripes that slice the face, the chestnut breast spotted with white, and at the center of it all, that lit red eye.

Most ducks live in open water where mate choice happens at a distance. Selection on plumage stays moderate, because being too bright in the open is being a target. Wood Ducks evolved in a different visual world. The forested Wetland is dim, dappled, broken by trunks and shadows. Visibility is short. To be readable in filtered shade, the drake had to become a stained-glass window, every feather working, to be seen at all.

But brilliance is not free. Every bright feather is a flag for a hawk. The Wood Duck’s resolution to this problem is one of the more elegant compromises in waterfowl evolution. The drake is brilliant for only about half the year. He molts twice, breeding plumage for the breeding season, drab eclipse plumage during the flightless summer weeks when he is most vulnerable. The cost of brightness is paid only when the benefit pays out.

And there is a second trick, hidden in the patterning itself. Look at the drake from above. The dark iridescent back reads almost as shadow. The bold white face stripes slice the silhouette into pieces. From directly overhead, the drake looks less like a duck and more like a patch of broken light on dark water.

The patterning that signals to another Wood Duck at twelve feet fragments the body to a hawk at fifty. The same feathers do double duty, courtship signal up close, disruptive camouflage from above. The brilliance and the camouflage are the same feathers. The same bird is signal and shadow, depending on who is looking and from where.

That lit red eye is the visible end of a long lineage. Algae make the carotenoid pigments. Damselfly nymphs and Water Beetles and Snails concentrate them. Wood Ducks eat the insects and the fruit, Wild Grape, Elderberry, Duckweed, the acorns of the Oak. The drake metabolizes the precursors into the reds of his plumage, and the visible vasculature of his iris carries the brightest red of all.

Red is expensive. The birds who can afford it are advertising something real. A degraded Wetland produces duller birds. The intensity of the red is the intensity of the place.

To be as alive as a Wood Duck. The Wood Duck is the forest. To comprehend a Wood Duck is to comprehend the ecology of wood, water, and dappled light.

The Mergansers gave up the depth that was their safety. They came up into shallow water where they could not dive, with their brood in the cover behind them. I had also left something behind to meet them there.

We met in the middle, in the six inches of water between us, where neither of us could escape the way we normally do.

A Wood Duck rarely lives past four. The thirty drakes in the cover line will mostly be gone in two years. The brilliant plumage I have been watching is the briefest visible flash in a very short life. The drake whose eye held mine almost certainly will not be in this Wetland in two years.

I am not watching a long-lived bird. I am watching a creature whose existence is built on the assumption that it will not last. The wariness, the social vigilance, the brilliance held in tension with risk, these are the strategies of a species that pays its survival debt in volume rather than longevity. Many birds, short lives, fast turnover.

And yet here they are, today. Held in cover. Watching me from the Buttonbush. Alive in this hour. The brevity is not a tragedy. It is the condition that makes the moment whole.

I have to work for what comes to him as breath. I have to close my eyes, lower my head, take two breaths, become still as a shrub. I have to walk through a door to enter the reality the Wood Duck never left.

The Wetland is a door. The birds are what is on the other side.

To be slow is to be present. To be present is to be aware. To be aware is to be alive.

We approached Magee Marsh in a long line of slow-moving vehicles that came to a halt for no apparent reason. Mercy, Randie, and I could see our destination off in the distance. We started slowly rolling along and we eventually came to the source of the traffic jam. Three families of Canada Geese were foraging on the roadside and they felt they owned the road. They wandered across the road and every car slowed down and gave them a wide berth. We eventually pulled into overflow parking in a large grassy field near the southern shore of Lake Erie.

Magee Marsh draws birdwatchers from around the world, and they were everywhere, gearing up, chatting, and staring into the trees and shrubs. We walked over to the boardwalk entrance and I looked at the long line of people crowded into a small space. I turned to Mercy and said, “Why don’t we start on one of the trails in the woods.” She said, “We came all this way to see the boardwalk.” So, we waded into the people and learned the ways of the boardwalk. The first thing that became clear is that you have to move at the pace of the crowd, pause often, and make the most of small gaps between people. This is full-contact birding.

We walked up to a young man with a confident air, Swarovski binoculars, and a Detroit Audubon hat. He was pointing into a dogwood shrub. “There’s a pair of yellow warblers at two o’clock. They’re moving right along a horizontal branch. They just dropped down near the water. Now they’re moving to the left. Another pair coming in. They’re chasing. Here they come.” And then whoosh — four yellow warblers chasing each other across the boardwalk, yellow flashes faster than we could track, zipping through the foliage and the crowd, a twittering yellow vortex. When they vanished into the shrubs, I turned to look at Mercy. She was wide-eyed and smiling. “Those warblers flew under the brim of my hat. I could feel them fly by. I’m not kidding.”

Welcome to the boardwalk.

The other birdwatchers were quiet, courteous, and decked out in fabulous gear. I saw one young woman with an external microphone clipped to her sun hat and an adapter plugged into her phone to enhance the reach of the Merlin app. We threaded our way from group to group. When you approach a group, someone will usually turn to you and quietly say the name of the bird that group is watching, and that name will pass between people up and down the boardwalk, a whispered word-of-mouth flowing like a river. The bird’s energy becomes a human voice that carries down the line. The whispered names were the beat of the conga line, birders dancing their way along the boardwalk.

When a bird comes into view the group lifts their binoculars. Now, each person is in their own little world. They find the bird, it slowly comes into focus, and a smile breaks across their face. Sometimes they gasp. That moment of recognition is part of the delight birdwatching delivers over and over.

We approached a group of twenty people and heard someone say Prothonotary Warbler. We scanned the trees and shrubs searching for yellow but could not find the bird. Then I looked at the group of people again and realized that a female Prothonotary was hopping around in a shrub just off the edge of the boardwalk. She was catching an insect every few seconds. She dropped down low and as I watched her I saw a flash of bright orange in the green foliage, a color even more startling than the brilliant yellow of the warbler. I focused on that spot and saw the unmistakable quivering of tiny nestlings begging for food. I took two steps to the right, leaned down, and saw a large brown circular shape in a willow shrub. It was a Robin’s nest. Nestlings were trembling with hunger. One of the parents flew in with a bill stuffed with limp worms, avian spaghetti, and the nestlings’ vibrant yellow-orange gapes opened wide. Four hungry mouths reached up out of the cup of the nest.

I was enchanted. I watched a few more deliveries, then stepped back to make space for others. A woman about my age stood next to me, fondling a long white Canon lens. She looked at me and said, “We would not be observing the nest if there were more warblers here.” I looked at her, smiled, and stepped across the boardwalk to keep photographing the nest.

Her comment contained a grain of truth. I feel the allure of warblers and the beauty they embody, but I will never tire of paying close attention to robins. Migrating warblers are fleeting acquaintances. Robins are like an old friend.

We moved down the boardwalk and stopped at an opening in the dogwoods. Randie said “Oh, look at that bird walking in the water.” A small rail was walking through a tangle of downed logs and waving grasses. He showed his rust-colored back, then the grass closed over him. He appeared again ten feet farther on. After a few minutes of watching and waiting, the Sora stepped out into the open and Randie exclaimed, “Look at that bright yellow bill!”

At this point, a crowd had gathered around us, so we stepped back from the Sora and leaned against the wooden railing. Mercy came over and stood next to me, then she leaned back and the top rail of the fence shifted. I thought I was going to fall into the marsh. I jumped forward and Mercy looked at me with a quizzical look. “Your great bulk shifted the railing,” I whispered. Mercy is petite. As if on cue, an older gentleman at the next intersection turned to us. “If you go left, there is a Saw-whet Owl,” he noted quietly, “but the railing on the right is more sturdy.”

We went left toward the Saw-whet and eased up to the edge of a group of forty people. They were all looking into a dogwood shrub just off the boardwalk. We waited for an opening and slipped into the group. I caught a glimpse of brown feathers through the leaves, but I could not make out the owl. We moved a little farther into the crowd, shoulder to shoulder. It was a tight squeeze. We eventually came to a spot with a better view. I slowly turned and looked between shoulder, hats, and leaves and there she was, eyes closed, so peaceful, sleeping amidst the crowd.

I have spent five years scanning evergreens in the hopes of seeing these tiny owls. This is the first one I have seen, a lifer, so tiny, so beautiful, so enigmatic. A tour guide nearby told the group to take thirty seconds to get a look and then move on. Then I heard him call for reinforcements. The crowd was swelling. We moved on and marveled at our great good fortune. We circled back to where we began after traversing a mile of boardwalk. When I stepped off the boardwalk, I felt elated and relieved to be in the open. As we contemplated what to do next, we noticed a large crowd gathered in a small opening in the woods. People were pointing fingers and cameras at the ground in an area with dense shrubs.

I scanned the area with my binoculars and saw a large sparrow foraging like a towhee. I squeezed into the group and got a better look. The sparrow turned to face me, and I saw black covering his head and throat. Harris’s sparrow! This bird of the central plains is a vagrant in Ohio and only a few are spotted a year. He is on his way to the boreal forest, yet, he seems at home here scratching in the leaf litter oblivious to the people that had gathered around him.

We made our way down the trail through a narrow band of woods just off the shore of Lake Erie. Birders were more dispersed in this area, but still common as robins. The phrase “Scarlet Tanager giving good looks” drifted through the air. I turned and watched three other birders who were intently staring at a patch of sumac on the beach. We walked over and stood next to them. A male Scarlet Tanager was hover gleaning and flycatching in the shrubs. When the other birders moved on I slowly half-stepped my way closer to the tanager. His bill was covered in insect bodyparts. He was electric.

We walked along the lakeshore until we reached the adjacent Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. We looked out over a large marsh and turned to head back. We were tired and at ease after five miles of camaraderie with birds and people.

Walking back, Mercy and Randie talking quietly behind me, I thought about the woman with the white Canon lens. She had wanted more warblers and had found a robin’s nest instead, and she had been disappointed. I had wanted warblers too, and the warbler had led me to the nest, and the nest is enough. Same shrub. Same morning. Same boardwalk full of strangers passing names to each other in half-whispers.

We are all embracing idleness, and this is a subversive act. There is a quiet solidarity in the whisper that turns strangers into community.

Is our idleness wholly idle, or is it in service to our insecurities or the easy appeal of this rare and fleeting moment of migration? I found myself wanting to linger with the robins and watch the sun light up the bright orange gapes of robin nestlings. I wanted to be captured by the mundane.

I thought of Randie watching the sora step out from the grass, her face opening like a child’s. I thought of Mercy laughing about the warblers under the brim of her hat. I thought of the tour guide calling for reinforcements at the Saw-whet, the young man with Swarovskis calling out directions to strangers. The warblers chase each other. The nestlings reach. The Sora steps into open ground. The sparrow scratches in the leaf litter. We slow down enough to see them, and in slowing down we see ourselves and each other. One world. Birds and us.

These are my people. This is my life.

We carry their names all winter:

Black-throated Blue, Prothonotary, Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Nashville.

The names held inside, half-asleep,

listening for the wind to turn.

And then, one blustery evening,

the wind turned and brought us gifts.

I walked into the park and the air was full of song,

full of motion,

full of small bright bodies we had been waiting for since fall.

I joined a group of fellow birders

on the bridge over Sugar Creek.

We were all smiling.

We scanned the canopy

and softly called out the names

of the birds we were seeing.

And then the birds came down to meet us,

four feet above our heads,

close enough to see the rings around their eyes,

close enough to see them breathing.

And for one brief moment we sensed

that we were fellow travelers,

that we will always be

on the same journey.

We all went quiet.

Even the birds.

We observed each other.

And then a small rush of wings

carried them into the canopy,

and we were left with our quiet joy

and the sense that everything

will be okay.

The asparagus spears snapped in my hands. Then, the sound: a squeak of shoes on a gym floor, sharp and unmistakable, falling from the canopy of the Silver Maple. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

I scanned the leaves on the walk back to the house. I hoped it would not be long before I caught a glimpse of him.

I stood inside watching. Sparrows came and went. Then a black-and-white flash disappeared into our Jonathan apple tree, and everything went still. A few minutes later a black head with bright eyes emerged from the leaves. I backed away from the window. The grosbeak observed the feeder for a long minute, conducting the ancient heavy weighing of risk and reward, then dropped onto the perch.

I went to the sliding door and stood behind the screen. Every line on him was sharp. The black of his hood, the white of his shoulder, the rose triangle laid on his chest like a brushstroke. And yet he was content and soft at the edges of his own boldness.

Then I heard his subtle calls, barely audible at ten feet. Who was he calling to? There was no other Grosbeak in the Maple that I could see. To my ear his calls conveyed contentment. The long flight from central or south America is over. An abundant food source was found. After a few minutes of eating sunflower seeds he flew back into the canopy and commenced his warble, which sounds like a Robin that has trained for the opera.

Six seconds. Twenty notes. He broadcasts it from the highest perch he can find, again and again, six or seven hundred times in a single day. Between phrases he gives that sharp chink, the gym-floor squeak, the punctuation that tells you he is still up there even when the warble pauses for breath.

This is the song that fills the field guides and the wonder of anyone who goes to the May woods with an open heart. This Grosbeak has recently crossed the Gulf of Mexico in a single night, in a pulsing feathered body that weighs about as much as a slice of bread, and he is announcing his arrival to a continent.

How is it possible that a heart, no bigger than a pearl, keeps its rhythm over a thousand miles of salt spray, wind, and waves? I ask this question every spring and never tire of the not-knowing. How does a bird this small carry that voice across a thousand miles of dark water and arrive at my apple tree with the song still in him.

The female will arrive in a few days, brown-streaked and quieter, easily mistaken for a sparrow by anyone not paying attention. She has flown the same gulf. She has the same strong beak, the same bright eye. What she does not have is the rose chest, and so for a long time we did not look at her closely enough.

They will choose a sapling fork together, six to twenty-six feet up, in second-growth woods. They will weave a cup of twigs and grass, and they will weave it loosely. So loosely that the eggs are visible from the ground below, through the bottom of the nest. A bird famous for the bold flag of his chest and a melodious song builds a nest you can see through.

Three or four speckled pale blue eggs. Both birds incubate. The male takes a turn for several hours during the day. The female covers the rest, and all the night. Several times a day they trade places. And when they trade places, both of them sing.

Not the canopy song. A different register. The same warbling phrases, but quiet, sometimes with the bill closed, audible only to a listener standing very near. The ornithological literature, having reached for a word and found nothing else that fit, calls it a soft song.

The female sings too. She sings the same warbling phrases as the male, in the same soft register, at the handoff and during nest-building and in moments we have not fully catalogued because we have not, until recently, been looking.

Her soft song is the sound of the world being put back together. It is the low humming of the earth itself. The secret language of those who know they are already home.

The duet at the nest exchange, the quiet warble between mates over a flimsy cup of twigs, has been happening every May and June since long before any of us were here to listen.

It is happening right now. Two birds, whispering to each other, shaping their world around a handful of speckled eggs.

The loud song from the canopy defends a perimeter. The soft song from the nest builds the world inside it.

The hard register makes room for the soft register. The bright chest flashes so the eye is drawn upward, away from the cup of twigs in the sapling fork where the actual life is being lived. The whole architecture of the bird is in service of the soft thing at the center.

Watching him, I think of what the old Chinese sages called the valley spirit. The low place where water gathers, the empty bowl that holds the meal, the dark mother from which everything comes and to which everything returns. They meant the feminine as the older thing, the deeper thing, the receptive ground in which the active world is rooted. The valley spirit, Lao Tzu wrote, never dies.

I think the grosbeak knows this in his small body. He sings the loud song from the high place. Then he comes down to the sapling fork and sits on the eggs and sings the soft song with the bill closed. He carries both. The bright chest and the patient sitting. The territorial warble and the quiet duet. He is undivided.

And so is the female. She incubates the eggs and warbles softly to her mate at the handoff and rises every spring to make the long journey north. The receptive and the active, in a single body. Each of them is the valley and the mountain at once.

Which means each of us is too. The bright outward life is also the patient inward one. We have been told for centuries that we must choose, that the strong is one thing and the soft another, that the masculine builds and the feminine tends. The Grosbeak does not know this story. The Grosbeak is busy being whole.

The small delicate birds face great obstacles, yet never lose faith in the song. They just keep singing the soft song. And eventually, over many seasons, something gives.

I have spent so much of my life being the hard thing. I have gripped the world until my knuckles turned white, forgetting that the nest is woven loosely for a reason. I am trying to learn what the bird already knows. The way through is soft. The way through has always been soft.

There is a darker thread in the bird’s story. On the wintering grounds the Rose-breasted Grosbeak is sometimes trapped and sold as a cage bird, because he is beautiful, because his song is beautiful, because we want to hold what we love.

The bird in the cage loses much, but he keeps his song. He sings it from inside the cage, and the song does what songs do. It carries across the room. It slips through the open window. It crosses the courtyard and reaches a tree where another bird is listening. It joins the larger conversation that has been going on in every grove and garden since long before there were any cages. The cage cannot hold the song. The song goes where soft things go, which is everywhere, through every crack, into every ear willing to receive it.

And so I stand at the screen door instead of reaching for him. The bird in the maple is giving me the song the way the song wants to be given, which is freely, into the air, with the maple and the woods and the female on her way north and the long history of May behind it. I want to be the listener whose hands are soft and open.

This is what I am meant to learn from him. Our lives are held the way those speckled eggs are held. By a net of relationships. By threads we can see through. By the soft songs we sing without quite knowing we are singing. Ben playing the cello. Noah making cookies. The way Mercy hums in the next room while the windows are open. Me cooking dinner. These are the soft threads the day is woven from. Without them, relationships falter.

The soft song crosses the walls of our houses and the borders of our nations and the partitions of our offices and the fences we build to keep one another at a manageable distance. It moves through them all. The hard structures look permanent, but they are not. The soft song has been crossing them the whole time. It is how we know one another at all.

I rinse the asparagus as the warble carries through the screen. Somewhere in the woods a female grosbeak is on her way north, brown and quiet and full of song. The world is not hardening. The world is opening, the way it does every spring.

Through the cracks, softly.
