Hi Eric, It is nice to hear from you. One of the things I appreciate about birds is how they bring people together. I have taken a long and winding road since my time at Eastern. Birds have always been part of my journey, but there were times when they were in the background. Over the past few years, I have reconnected with birds and that has been a great gift. I hope you are doing well. Thanks for subscribing to my newsletter.
Thank you. All it takes is practice. The more you bird the easier it gets. That is one of the benefits of doing a big day. By the end of the day you have had so much exposure to birds and their songs that they really start to sink in and you become much more proficient.
You captured everything magical and life-affirming about birding in this post!
Jamie Wyeth pained Herring Gulls acting out the Seven Deadly Sins. I have a copy of the book, which is amazing: https://www.farnsworthmuseum.org/exhibition/jamie-wyeth-seven-deadly-sins/#:~:text=The%20subject's%20focus%20is%20human,century%20Dominican%2C%20Saint%20Thomas%20Aquinas.
Thank you for sharing. I was not aware of these paintings. They are beautiful and provocative.
Nice essay! Enjoyed reading it!

Beautiful pictures, you give me hope that someday I will be as skilled finding the birds I am hearing.
