Wonderful! Love the story of Alfie and Carl, how tender their connection. Mutual love and respect. I had to smile about your owl box. My husband made one and when the tree guys came to care for our big trees, one of them fastened it high up on a trunk. Not long after, I looked out and saw a squirrel just hanging out the hole surveying the yard, like “I can’t believe my luck.” So much for that! He doesn’t even pay rent.
When we connect with our non-human companions we connect with our inner beings. Your story of Alfie and Carl is not only touching, but a true example of how we can live our lives in harmony with our environment, not to dominate, but in appreciation and in cooperation.
Carl Safia is my favorite writer. I to have had the privilege of raising a screech owl and a great horned owl for successful soft releases. Good luck with your nest box. Great essay Bill! Thanks for sharing.
Like a child jumping up and down at the sight of a new puppy. So exciting. Just imagine what it would be like to even feel one moment of the relationship between Carl and Alfie. It would be an honor just to watch over these incredible beings. I hope you get the opportunity.
Me too! Love this story. I too look forward to what goes on with the owls. I hope they stay, your pictures and knowledge of them will be entertaining as well as enlightening. ❤️
Sadly, our screech owl house has been taken over first by squirrels and now starlings. But we had one joyful sprig with a family of screech owls a few years ago. What a thrill!
Please keep us posted on the homemaking progress of your two new friends. And if you do decide to write a series of essays on owl facial expressions, I will read every word! 🤎🦉
I'm just besotted with the photos of Alfie all soft in Carl's presence. Thank you so much for sharing these, Bill. Wishing you and yours a peaceful and sweet co-living situation with your new and inquisitive neighbours.

Thank you Bill!
The image of Alfie and her wild mate is powerful.
I look forward to any images and stories you will share about the pair who has chosen you. 😊
WOW, Bill! The photo of Alfie and her wild mate made me cry a little — look at the love in her eyes 🥹
